If you're looking for peace and quiet in Formentera, the best area to stay is La Mola and El Pilar de la Mola, in the east of the island: it's the most rural and secluded part. Es Caló and some stretches of Migjorn are also very quiet.
Formentera is small, but each area has its own pace. Choosing the right place to stay changes the whole trip: waking up next to a busy harbour is not the same as waking up surrounded by countryside and silence. If what you want is calm, privacy and time for yourself and your people, this guide will help you decide.
Before you choose: what Formentera is like
You can drive from one end of the island to the other in just over half an hour. That means that wherever you stay, everything is fairly close. What really changes from one area to another is the atmosphere: how many people there are, the noise at night and whether you feel you're on holiday or simply living a different life.
Ferries from Ibiza arrive at La Savina, in the north-west. From there, most visitors split their time between the northern beaches, such as Ses Illetes and Llevant, and the villages of Es Pujols and Sant Francesc.
The main areas to stay in Formentera
La Savina. The island's port. Very practical if you arrive late or leave early, and close to the northern beaches. On the other hand, it has the bustle you'd expect from a harbour.
Es Pujols. The most touristy and lively area, with restaurants, bars and nightlife. A good fit if you want a buzz, less so if you want to rest.
Sant Francesc Xavier. The island's capital, with shops, restaurants and services. Central and convenient, and it still feels like a village.
Sant Ferran de ses Roques. A small village in the middle of the island, well placed for getting anywhere.
Migjorn. The long southern coast, with kilometres of beach. There are places to stay spread along the coast, some of them quite peaceful.
Es Caló de Sant Agustí. A small fishing hamlet at the foot of La Mola, with boats pulled up on the shore and a very serene feel.
La Mola and El Pilar de la Mola. The eastern plateau is the highest and most rural part of the island. Dirt tracks, dry stone walls, juniper trees and sea views everywhere. Life here moves more slowly than anywhere else in Formentera.
Why we recommend La Mola for a quiet stay
We speak from experience, because this is where our house is. La Mola is away from the flow of most day visitors, and at night the silence is almost total. It's also home to some of the island's most special places: the La Mola lighthouse, the cliffs, the tracks across the plateau and the village of El Pilar de la Mola, with its craft market in season.
The downside? The best-known beaches are a bit further away, and you'll want a car, scooter or e-bike to get around. For anyone looking for calm, it's a small price to pay: beaches are best enjoyed early in the morning, and in the afternoon you head back home to the pool and the garden.
Hotel, apartment or house: what kind of place to choose
- Hotel: comfortable and with services, but with set times and shared spaces.
- Apartment: a good option for couples or short stays.
- House or villa with a pool: the option that gives you the most privacy, especially for families or groups of friends. You have your own space, your own schedule and the chance to cook and eat outdoors.
If you choose a house, check that it has a tourist licence (in Formentera it's compulsory for holiday rentals), how many people it sleeps and what the price includes, such as cleaning or utilities.
Our house in La Mola
Can Javi de Palma is our family home, about 800 metres from El Pilar de la Mola. It has three double bedrooms, two full bathrooms and a guest toilet, a pool, outdoor shower, garden, children's play area and a big barbecue. It sleeps up to six adults and holds tourist licence ET6047. It's not a hotel or a luxury villa: it's the house where we spend our summers, and we share it with people who want to discover the quietest side of Formentera. You can see the house and check availability.
